Competencies of Belonging

Competencies of Belonging

“Most of us think of belonging as a mythical place, that if we keep diligently searching for, we might eventually find. But what if belonging isn’t a place at all, but a skill: a set of competencies that we, in modern life, have lost or forgotten? Like the living bridge, these competencies are the ways in which we can coax, weave, and tend to the roots of our separation—and in so doing, restore our membership in belonging. Like any practice worth undertaking, belonging cannot be mastered overnight. Because it is a disappearing art, we might find ourselves going it alone for a while and the temptation to lose hope will be strong. But we must keep a vision of how we want our lives and the world to look, and work towards weaving those first threads together. Even when the garment of belonging seems flimsy and inadequate, we must keep to the task until it substantiates.”

Being Held Under: the dream (pantoum)

Sleep and the torment of undifferentiated events occurring and reoccurring

Crying out to the nursemaid that appears, an invented character –not an ally

Furiously I dig into depths of sediment made (up) of eons before and still to come

Anonymous things cascade as their very formation, epic some, insidious others

Crying out to the nursemaid that appears an invented character, not –an ally

Sure that help must come, as sure as previous layers settled Once Upon a Time

Anonymous, things cascade as their very formation –epic, some insidious, others

Remaining unresolved, thus acting as antigen, both antagonist and protagonist

Sure that help must come, as sure as previous layers once settled upon, a time

Repeating itself once again, yet the faces and objects take on different colors, shapes

Remaining unresolved thus acting as, antigen both antagonist/protagonist

Clambering to the ungraspable source, the surface –life support, of which there is none

Repeating itself once again yet the faces… and objects take on different colors, shapes

What mystery this puzzle that takes itself so resolutely magnificent in its diffuse distillations

Clambering to the ungraspable, source the surface, life support of which there is –none

Better than waking (up) dreaming –only to recognize the once hidden throngs effervesced

National Poetry Month ~ An evening of “Poetry in Translation” @ SOMOS in Taos, NM

As part of April as National Poetry Month, here in Taos there have already been many wonderful gatherings, readings, and performances devoted to our love of poetry and local poets here in Taos. There are three more events this week, one workshop and two evenings of poetry readings. I will be presenting something different than I have ever before ~ a cross-pollination between my poetry and my photography, as well as a chance to share a number of my visual poems.

On Saturday evening at 5:30pm at SOMOS (Society of the Muse of the Southwest), I will be joining curator Ariana Kramer and two other poets, Sonja Kravanja and Fiona Sze-Lorrain, to share on a theme of Poetry in Translation. If you are any where in the local area of Taos, New Mexico, please consider joining us! These events are free (a few specific ones are not) and are presented by SOMOS and the Taos Arts Council, along with our amazingly creative curator (and also poet), Ariana Kramer. The latter of the month has another 4 events. See the flyer below for more details.

Concurrent with these events, I am also participating in “Poetry in Public Places”, where local poets have printed a poem of theirs, which was then placed in a frame and now dons the walls of one of numerous local establishments. My poem, “Brightness Spectrum“, is at Coffee Cats in the John Dunn Shops arcade right near the Taos Plaza. If you go for a visit to read the poems, please thank our hosts, Coffee Cats, for participating in this cultural celebration of poetry and local poets. 🙂

And a final note of mention, since my presentation is in the form of a PowerPoint presentation, I will have it documented and hope to share it here on my blog, in future!

Leadership as Primal Ground – Part 1 ~ Communing With Animals blog post #2

It’s time for this written exploration, as interactions and conversations about leadership have been coming up in numerous areas and within different connections for me right now. I would like to share about leadership from a very personal perspective about ways that my own leadership has been called out by the animals in my life or the animals that cross my path in any number of ways that they do and will. What do I mean by leadership here? In Part 1, I will start by sharing my perspectives and then get into more directly applicable notes and suggestions in Part 2.

Leadership within the context of culture and humans, where power dynamics and hierarchy are favored, is more often than not the skillful exertion of power for some specific means or end such as control of outcomes or progression along a focused directive or to express one’s outer authority. Leadership within the context of the instinctual life force and vitality we share with animals is a way of being that is primally or instinctually meaningful to both human and animal. This is the kind of leadership I would like to explore with you here in this post. Leadership as reliable, primal ground allows both the human body and the animal body to be supple enough to respond fluidly in any situation without the distortion of reaction or fixation.

As some of you know, I have been called on to step in to a number of peoples’ lives to assist with creating new patterns or ways of relating with animals that allow for harmony where there was once disruption, confusion, or upset related to how an animal was acting or behaving. Assisting in this way is the work I do in Communing With Animals. In nearly all of these situations, it’s become important to look at the kind of leadership that is being engaged in by both human and animal. It may sound odd to say this, but I have found again and again that animals are expressing leadership and offering us leadership even when engaged in a disconcerting or upsetting kind of behavior or action. We are being invited to take their cues and listen in, in a new way, to what is being communicated energetically and via both the primal and subtle bodies.

Leadership, no matter what kind, when expressed consistently and reliably has a way of providing context or structure for life and life force, such as energy, thoughts, direction, or connection. Leadership doesn’t always have a positive or harmonious outcome! We each are expressing leadership whenever we practice or engage any behavior or pattern consistently. Thus, we all have the capacity for leadership and are providing leadership, whether we realize it or not. This realization came to me clearly while working with animals and trying to understand myself more transparently through those connections, as well as through my more unconscious reactions that surfaced around animals. Sometimes I led with frustration. Oh dear me!

I see repeatedly in my connections with animals that I am the one providing leadership around energetic patterns, especially the ones that are ultimately unsettling and out of balance for both me and the animals I’m with. Wow. This has been a big eye opener. I see this happening with my clients, as well. Sometimes fearful interaction is the kind of leadership being provided. Very often, excited relating or interaction is an unconscious kind of leadership or leadership style. Maybe consider for a moment what kinds of leadership you do provide and have provided, not only with yourself and others, but with the animals in your life.

As I reflect back on situations that I have shared with animals that may have felt frustrating, confusing, or even nerve-racking, I see there is a pretty big difference between seeing a pattern as it is and being able to create a new, life enhancing pattern in its place. It’s not always easy to be put directly in touch with my own habits. (So, I want to put in a plug for self-compassion and right timing both, as integral parts of this conversation!) Sometimes my tendencies and preferences are held unconsciously or seem unrelated to what is at hand, so I’ve seen myself fault toward dismissing the importance of my leanings toward less than beneficial ways of relating in the now.

I have worked with this directly and had shifts that have allowed both me and the dogs I’m relating with or working with to drop into a more easeful, relaxed state. This state is closest to the primal restorative state that is truly a birthright for all creatures, whether human, mammal, or other kind of creature. Especially in the most aggravated situations, the kind of approach I describing here is essentially the most fundamental way to address out of balance situations.

I’ll next describe, in Part 2, what working with leadership as reliable primal ground can look like in several specific situations, some of which I have been asked online for some assistance. Since this is a blog post, what I’m sharing here is somewhat theoretical, as this is not a hands on, interactive session. But the upside of that is that others may be able to experiment with applying some of these changes in approach and find the way of leadership to a new calm or ease.

• • •

May you be inspired to explore some of what I’m talking about here as it relates to you and the animals in your life. I have found that how I am, how I offer my energy, and then how I relate with animals via that energy, that these modes are the building blocks for harmonious, shared experiences that then, day after day, make up a more continuous or fluid reality.

Stay tuned (or sign up to receive my blog posts directly from WordPress by email) for Part 2! Thanks for reading. I would love to hear your thoughts and comments, as well as any scenarios that came up for you while reading this Part 1 introduction & orientation to leadership as reliable, primal ground.

Meeting profound change together at the very core of relating ~ Communing With Animals

Testimonial ~ Communing With Animals ~

I first met Janice when I was out on a walk with my dog. I took Dennis out into a snowy field to avoid an unpleasant interaction because my dog used to pull and lunge toward other dogs when he was on the leash and Janice was walking down the road with her dog Blue.

Although I was way out in the field, Dennis who weighs 90 pounds still pulled me down into the snow, as I was trying to stop him from lunging toward Blue. Janice and I were able to talk a bit over the commotion and she told me she works helping people and dogs communicate better.

Dennis and I have met with Janice several times over the past months. We have walked together and practiced working with Dennis when he is approached by other dogs. To my amazement, the very core of my relationship with Dennis has been impacted in a profound way through our work with Janice.
She has given me practical techniques for working with Dennis in high stress situations, including using the leash in a different way and getting his attention to me when he is distracted by another dog, person or squirrel. As a result, the whole nature of my walks with Dennis has changed. Rather than pulling me, Dennis now walks beside me and is even able to walk calmly off the leash quite often. When we pass by another dog, I know how to give Dennis a gentle, but firm physical touch to remind him to pay attention to my directions.
Just as important as the physical techniques, Janice has introduced me to new ways of thinking about my relationship with Dennis and how we communicate and make agreements on working together. For instance, I no longer see Dennis as “misbehaving.” I see that he is acting out of some deep desire to protect me and himself when we are approached by another dog. I feel I am more able to see the situation from his perspective as animal, dog, Belgian Malinois, and Dennis. I find that there is a stronger and more loving connection between us now.
Of course, there are set backs, but now when something goes wrong, I know that I will be able to address it in a positive way, using the knowledge I’ve gained from working with Janice. It has truly been a life-changing experience for me. I worry so much less about the trouble that Dennis might cause. He seems very aware of my state of my mind and also more relaxed as a result.

In response to Cindy’s wonderful testimonial: First off, I’d like to say to Cindy, your commitment to expanding in a sustainable way beyond current limited habits and beliefs is highly commendable. You are a true pleasure to work with. Thank you.
How the opportunity came up to work with Cindy and Dennis was a beautiful example of right timing. I’ve recognized over the years of working with individuals in their personal growth and expansion process that the potency of the work has a lot to do with right timing, as well as having sufficient resources to meet the needs or challenges that those individuals may face at that time. Cindy’s story of how we met that snowy day, Cindy and Dennis in the field and Blue and I on our road taking our morning walk together, reveals how the right timing was indeed at hand. The right timing was not only for Cindy and Dennis but for the four of us, to meet for the first time in that way, initiating our collaboration.
Our work together, over a series of three sessions, gave us opportunities to draw on a range of different resources, both inner and outer. Cindy engaged our sessions fully and willingly. Her receptivity to guidance and seeing new ways of relating with herself and Dennis were key resources that I could also draw on as a facilitator. Cindy also drew on internal resources that she embodies, such as her mindfulness background and practices.
A resource that I draw on frequently is the power of perceiving the felt sense present in the relating between human and animal, as well as animal and their environment. Listening to the intelligence available in that felt sense (using all the senses), I am able to feel into the energetic connection the person shares with their companion animal. (We all do this, often unconsciously more than consciously.) I also draw on the transparency innate in animals to communicate their experiences directly through signals portrayed in their body language.
Another resource that I drew on with Cindy and Dennis was years of experience in spontaneously accessing and implementing practical ways to either trouble-shoot or enhance the situation at hand, as we encountered those situations. As an example, Cindy mentioned the different ways of working with the leash; there are so many more possibilities with leashes than how we tend to use them!
Clearly, the emphasis is not just on me as facilitator of the sessions to bring the necessary resources. These sessions are truly collaborative! When a client can find within themselves ways to be self-revealing, even when it feels risky, the capacity of the working relationship expands exponentially. Cindy modeled that beautifully, such that she stepped into a place for herself and Dennis to mutually benefit from this work, on multiple levels for each. The more shared resources made available, the more transformative this work has the possibility of becoming.
Some particular gems that came up in our sessions were about attention, both fixed attention (something that Dennis was getting waylaid by and Cindy caught up in, sometimes literally) as well as how to shift to more receptive or fluid attention. Again and again, I have been shown by all sorts of animals that I have had the opportunity to commune with, what fluid attention and receptive awareness can look and feel like. I often credit my Permaculture training (I was certified in 1995) as the beginning of cracking open my own capacity for a different kind of attention, one without so many fixed notions or ideas of what is “better” or “worse” and one that ultimately can restore us to our innate receptivity, vitality, and capacity to be at ease in our bodies, our lives, and our relationships.
In one of her examples, Cindy mentioned something I can expand on about Dennis and seeing from his perspective “as animal, dog, Belgian Malinois, and Dennis.” A change in perception, such as in this example, brings the possibility of immediate expansion into a wider lived reality. The inspirational perception I drew on in this particular session with Cindy & Dennis is that our companion animals are much more than just the one we mean when calling them by name or relating to them through their personality. We love our animal companions and their personalities, yet what often gets overlooked in this predominantly affection-based relating (literally repeating a dog’s name is a stimulation, sometimes affectionate, sometimes confusing or even punishing) is the rich array of internal resources our companion animals actually bring to our shared relationship.
Our canine companions experience interrelated realities of their breed along with their simple dog-ness. There is also a very essential aspect of their reality, the more primal experiencing of mammal or animal (one which we share in through our limbic brains). We can choose to relate with our companion animals including all four of these aspects: 1) their primal animalness, 2) their species of animal (i.e. their dog-ness), 3) their breed/genetics they carry (wow, what differences!), and finally 4) their unique personality. We know that our animals so easily mirror things about ourselves back to us, but the exploration and depth of new ways to relate really opens up when we begin to tap into the resources found at all four of these levels of being and perceiving.
Thank you again, Cindy, for this opportunity to share the benefits of our sessions together with a much wider audience. The cool thing is that each person and animal that steps together into a fresh or newly vitalized way of relating and communing can become The Model for what is possible in this awesomely expanding, shared consciousness field of inter-species relating. Namaste, I bow to this awesomeness in you!

Introducing ~ Communing With Animals page on Facebook by Janice Sandeen

Through Communing With Animals, I offer interactive consultations, which naturally neutralize opposites that often bring unnecessary polarization (aka stressors) between you and your companion animals or any other relating or environmental situation you share with animals. Any seemingly minor stressor can be the perfect opportunity to open to a more expanded level of awareness between you and your companion animal. These sessions have been life-changing for my clients, as well as opportunities to bring in new levels of relaxation, thus well-being into body, mind, and one’s life in general!

Brightness Spectrum

The day seemed brighter than usual in the most uncanny of ways.

The creek could be heard flowing and the flies and bees buzz

was also heard more clearly than usual. But amidst all of these patterns,

there was something else fractured and marred beyond

any usual glimpse of what life could be or look like.

There was the stimulation of things unknown,

which is always there for the taking or playing with ~

but today it was more like the unknown of the unknown.

Unknowing squared. It’s not quite like a double negative.

Unknown and more unknown is just the unknown.

It may seem odd to ask, “what do we know

about the unknown?”–but it’s precisely that

kind of question that is needed at times.

The words tick on like seconds on a clock,

like bees returning to the hive,

like water flowing ever down, down, down.

The words themselves are sometimes the only clues

and today those clues are: brighter, fractured,

marred, stimulation, unknown, uncanny,

double negative, and even a few yet spoken.

If I could grind up these words to make a pigment

to paint with, these would be music more than color,

the music of thunder, the shudder of forces of nature

coming into contact and then departing or dispersing.

How could anything as broken as fractured stimulation

become the clue to some of the greatest mysteries of being?

How could something as uncanny as a double negative

serve a higher cause than the brightness of a day?

How fortunate to be inside the Rubik’s Cube of sound itself

such that even sound follows a brightness spectrum.

But there are days such as these.
