timeless Earth :: all that lives, all that dies, all that is ~ carries on

Seeing as clearly and nakedly as possible - just what is
Late afternoon on Earth Day 2020, I found myself here where I took these photographs along the Rift Valley Overlook Trail south of Taos, New Mexico.

My dog, Blue, and I step out into the day numerous times a day everyday. On this day, April 22nd, as many of us know has been commemorated for 50 years now as “Earth Day”, we came here and I found my whole being joining with the awe and vitality of All That Is expressed through the skies and the vast open land.
The extraordinary dance of the elements in northern New Mexico calls me out and again and again lifts my spirits and my knowing of myself as vast awareness and consciousness, as well as being in elemental synchronicity with all that is.

Of course these are extraordinary times overall, not just as we reflect on Earth Day having been openly celebrated now for 50 years. The Earth is known and recognized, at this time, to be close to 5 billion years old. There are many things that we do our best to figure out and deciphering the ‘age’ of the Earth is one of those things. A margin of error of 50 million years is factored in to this scientifically based estimate (using carbon dating) of how long Earth has existed.

How many extraordinary ‘times’, as we are in now, have pulsed through the seemingly fathomless length and depth of earth time? How many other catalytic events or disruptive cycles have shaped the Earth and also shaped us as earth beings, human and non-human beings alike to who and what we are today globally and collectively?
A week or so after Earth Day, the days have begun to feel warmer here in Taos, even hot just after midday and into mid-afternoon. So Blue and I ventured to where the shadows of trees would cool and protect us as we walked together. These delicate flowers were thriving in the protection of the Ponderosa pines in the forest we found ourselves in. Whenever I can, I will take a pause to sit or even lay on the Earth, perhaps my favorite kind of meditation. After sitting awhile, then my eyes were drawn to these beauties.

Here in Taos, we still have a month or so before the clouds will gather enough precipitation for rains to begin falling as part of the monsoon season in northern New Mexico. The cloud beings that gather in these parts are favorites of mine. I literally feel the uplift of their presence and feel, oddly, as if they are my very own playmates! (What do they hold within themselves?)
Cloud beings seen ‘dancing’ and touching the thermal rise of the mountains, here looking toward Taos Mountain and the Sangre de Christos a few days before Earth Day on April 18th.
This time of year, early springtime with things warming up some, we see the apricot trees starting to come out in full bloom. I see this as another kind of precipitation, that of life force and nectar and flower essence. I often pause and thank the trees for their beauty and renewal, once again, calling to the inner reaches of my own essence to hint forward.

Every year with every season, I notice differences and fluctuations, subtle shifts within my own timing that most often are stimulated by that unique elemental dance before and around me. Grasping that I am part of all life, life being life, what a potent way to wake up to what is moving for me within the internal landscape as my own earth and skies! There I can also experience what is budding or coming to fruition literally and creatively.
I brIng my attention back to the different scales of time and also perception, to the alchemical dance of seeming opposites, as well as to this time, this season. We exist in local or linear time, as well as non-local time. We walk in the space between earth and sky, as well as being deeply embedded in both. Have you ever considered what might be Earth Time?

We are earth, we are carbon and fire, we are sky, we are water and air. We are also time and timeless. We are hungry and thirsty, we are nourishment itself, as we are death, we are life. We are that which continues.
The patterns hold our cells together and our cells dance their dance to codes that are so deeply held that they are nearly invisible, but through and through ever present. Some ancient and primordial, some just cresting the newest edge or wave of open-sourced evolutionary possibilities.

Could this recent pandemic (considering that the root of this word is the Greek pandemos, ~ pan meaning ‘all’ and demos meaning ‘people’ or all people) be something truly new universally, as in the novel (corona) virus? Viruses have existed almost as long as the Earth has been in existence. Viruses are, essentially, as timeless as the Earth.

In the Virus-first hypothesis, a scientific theory of viral evolution, viruses played a part in cellular life emerging. We as cellular life have been in mutual tolerance with viruses throughout known existence. As paradoxical as this might seem, life as we know it is what it is integrally woven through and through with viruses. Viruses by nature are constantly in mutation and act as a catalyst to life via their RNA and DNA mutative information.

There is something called a phylogenetic tree that shows that all life or all organisms now on Earth have what is termed a LUCA or last universal common ancestor. It is as if we have all emerged from the same forest floor or more accurately from the capacity to find and take nourishment from existence itself. And we share our information.

We are a mutational species by nature. Perhaps we have our closely tied journey to the mutational journey of viruses to thank for more than we know. Many people right now are saying “we are all in this together’. In an oddly comforting way, I think of that We as including ALL OF LIFE and in that also including whatever mutational energies, including viruses, including all the anomalies or deviations that can so provoke or temporarily destabilize us such that certain kinds of change are possible. AH.
Ahh. And with that contemplation, breathing out I lay myself back on the forest floor of my own life. I see small delicate flowers emerging. I see the bed of the forest floor made up of so many magical bits and elemental forces. Some of those are seemingly ‘dead’ and others are the living intelligences above and below the surfaces, bacterial life, mycelial life, microorganisms. And all are co-existing within our macroevolution, mutation upon mutation.

Breathing in, I find myself soaring again within the vast space of molecules of oxygen and water mixed with millions upon millions of micro-particulate and bacterial beauty, finding the immeasurable in life being life. AH OM HUM.
Thank you this earthly existence, thank you Mother Earth, thank you the We that we all are, gratitude and blessings! I find myself in this place, Taos, New Mexico and I am nourished. May this nourishment also find its way into your heart of hearts or some essential part of your being, offering what it can to sustain you. – With great love, Janice

Rave New Year 2019 arrived earlier today!

Rave New Year graphic by Yvonne Love ~ many thanks to Yvonne for letting me share your artwork!

Happy Rave New Year ~ here’s a Human Design & Rave New Year related post :
In the 64 Hexagrams of the I’Ching, the 41st Hexagram is the one initiating codon of all of the 64 codons in the hexagrams. Thus, we began the new cycle, the Rave New Year on January 22nd, 2019 at 08:10:21 UTC (Universal Time) or for those living in the United States, as I do, at 3:10:21 AM EST, 2:10:21 AM CST, 1:10:21 AM MST, 12:10:21 AM PST (and if you are in Hawai’i, it was at 1/21/2019 at 10:10:21 PM!) when the Sun moved into the 41st hexagram or Gate (as we refer to it in Human Design). The bodygraph showing the 41.1 Sun & 31.1 Earth notation (plus the Nodes and the rest of the planets) for this new annual cycle can be seen above in Yvonne’s artful rendition.
My own practice/response around New Year/Rave New Year
I have been making a practice (now for many years) of honoring the Rave New Year as my new annual cycle rather than the Gregorian calendar new year arriving on the 1st of January each year. It’s something I have experimented with, as in using my Inner Authority (I have an Emotional definition, so working with my Solar Plex as inner authority) and I have noticed, even though it often puts me outside of more mainstream celebrations and such, that I breathe more deeply within the body (which the Human Design System is so beautifully attuned to!) in this recognition that the conventional calendar is something I can give or take based on what is energetically most alive for me at that time.
We all enjoy or deal with these “set” holidays and markers in our own ways, but I find for myself since they are quite abstract. I do not always feel to be in natural time with some of the more conventional or mainstream calendar markers. I take things as I go, energetically as a Generator. If my energy responds to something going on or that I’m invited to or somehow perk up around, I listen to each thing through response and then go from there.
Again, wishing you blessings in this new annual cycle, Happy Rave New Year 2019!
Love, Janice

Competencies of Belonging

Quote: Toko-pa Turner, Belonging: Remembering Ourselves Home, 2017

Competencies of Belonging

“Most of us think of belonging as a mythical place, that if we keep diligently searching for, we might eventually find. But what if belonging isn’t a place at all, but a skill: a set of competencies that we, in modern life, have lost or forgotten? Like the living bridge, these competencies are the ways in which we can coax, weave, and tend to the roots of our separation—and in so doing, restore our membership in belonging. Like any practice worth undertaking, belonging cannot be mastered overnight. Because it is a disappearing art, we might find ourselves going it alone for a while and the temptation to lose hope will be strong. But we must keep a vision of how we want our lives and the world to look, and work towards weaving those first threads together. Even when the garment of belonging seems flimsy and inadequate, we must keep to the task until it substantiates.”

National Poetry Month ~ An evening of “Poetry in Translation” @ SOMOS in Taos, NM

As part of April as National Poetry Month, here in Taos there have already been many wonderful gatherings, readings, and performances devoted to our love of poetry and local poets here in Taos. There are three more events this week, one workshop and two evenings of poetry readings. I will be presenting something different than I have ever before ~ a cross-pollination between my poetry and my photography, as well as a chance to share a number of my visual poems.

On Saturday evening at 5:30pm at SOMOS (Society of the Muse of the Southwest), I will be joining curator Ariana Kramer and two other poets, Sonja Kravanja and Fiona Sze-Lorrain, to share on a theme of Poetry in Translation. If you are any where in the local area of Taos, New Mexico, please consider joining us! These events are free (a few specific ones are not) and are presented by SOMOS and the Taos Arts Council, along with our amazingly creative curator (and also poet), Ariana Kramer. The latter of the month has another 4 events. See the flyer below for more details.

Concurrent with these events, I am also participating in “Poetry in Public Places”, where local poets have printed a poem of theirs, which was then placed in a frame and now dons the walls of one of numerous local establishments. My poem, “Brightness Spectrum“, is at Coffee Cats in the John Dunn Shops arcade right near the Taos Plaza. If you go for a visit to read the poems, please thank our hosts, Coffee Cats, for participating in this cultural celebration of poetry and local poets. 🙂

And a final note of mention, since my presentation is in the form of a PowerPoint presentation, I will have it documented and hope to share it here on my blog, in future!

Introducing ~ Communing With Animals page on Facebook by Janice Sandeen

Through Communing With Animals, I offer interactive consultations, which naturally neutralize opposites that often bring unnecessary polarization (aka stressors) between you and your companion animals or any other relating or environmental situation you share with animals. Any seemingly minor stressor can be the perfect opportunity to open to a more expanded level of awareness between you and your companion animal. These sessions have been life-changing for my clients, as well as opportunities to bring in new levels of relaxation, thus well-being into body, mind, and one’s life in general!

Recipe for Reclamation

This recipe is as old as the ages are old
More ancient than the most ancient of beings, trees, creatures, or even fossils that still reside on this earth plane we take our physical nourishment from
Only, it is a new recipe now for what we are now, every evolutionary iteration that we have in our midst, at this time
We each might need to scour the threads, some very bare, some still shining sovereign, to discern those ancient traces
•
That return each and every one of us to the most pristine truth of what we are
One recipe stirs within my dreamtime, a sacred housing of the rich multiplicity reaching b e y o n d  whatever amnesias once wracked my living essence down to the bone
I woke to this hunger, letting it crack me open, showing me the journey way to the most hidden of truths
•
And yet something was needed to nourish me along this way
What recipe to draw from hard ground, the driest of remnants, grit and obscurity; what song?
The very least of these came in order to speak a new language, familiar, yet otherworldly from the deepest chasms that, somehow, I chose to look away from out of fear of not ever finding myself (out of fear of not ever finding  m y s e l f  )

Turning (my) World Inside Out

I am not a poet ~ the world, as I know it, is.

Everything everywhere.

I am not a woman ~ this world is a woman’s domain

and I am in it and of that.

Nature does not surround me ~ I am nature itself

and I live within  my own sphere.

I am not someone imagining what the world might become.

I am that becoming or that emergence in the making.

Hesitation ~ where and what are you? What is this task?

What are we creating as this conversation,

not much different than gestation, something earlier conceived.

Looking out is no more ~ it is not even looking within, it is the active principle

such as breath and breathing ~ continuous and life evolving,

does not need to be named to continue.

Approval ~ what are you ~ takes a unique set of circumstances

to make you relevant, to make your existence, to map the terrain

in which you stretch and wallow and bring forth your experience.

[There are many things we regularly turn inside out (socks, clothes), some even surprisingly, but when it comes to turning this world inside out ~ what of it? What not of it? When can I not do or see or perceive that is so when I receive that calling? Like birth, it comes of its own accord and in its own timing ~ such that we have evolved something we call death. Is that the world turned inside out, birth becomes something reversibly irreversible?]

The world is not me, I am the world emerging and forthcoming

~ only perception forms and forms and forms again.

Sometimes it takes listening to these things loudly, not quietly as some might suggest.

Turn the volume inside out and there is the advantage, the preeminent seeing of what is.

Turning the world inside out, I turn myself out into a world that has

not once yet rejected me or scorned me or humiliated me, but

has me at its very crystalline heart beat, pulsing as aliveness and ardor.

The world as poet opens her domain to the wide spread arms

of welcoming ~ laughing itself awake to itself, hesitatingly unhesitant.

Living questions

morning footstream with wild plums

20 May 2016 ~ My walk this morning was a natural inquiry, one that happened gently on its own. Sometimes contemplations are like that, as they gently arise from the font of one’s inner life. I find that as I set my body into motion as I walk with my dog this morning, that there is another stream there, an inner world that has its own unique ecology and resilience. Continue reading
